Abstract

1,251,018. Compasses. J. S. STAEDTLER. 27 Feb., 1970, No. 9675/70. Heading B6P. A pair of compasses comprises two legs 10, 12 pivoted to a handle 18 and is provided with a rotatable threaded spindle 32, the spindle having threads such that manual separation of the legs 10, 12 will cause the spindle to rotate, the leg 12 being provided with threaded locking means engaging the spindle and capable of being clamped on the spindle to prevent free rotation of the spindle. The locking means may comprise a split or elastic nut which can be compressed on to the spindle. Various means of compressing the nut are described, including coacting conical surfaces (Fig. 4, not shown). In place of a split or elastic nut, an adjustable member may be provided bearing directly on the spindle 32 (Fig. 6, not shown).
