Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A composite is formed from alternate layers of two materials A and B, A being fibrous or filamentary and B melting at a lower temperature than A, by assembling the layers, enclosing them in a thin container of higher melting point than B, heating to melt material B, applying pressure and cooling. A may be parallel carbon filaments, successive layers being disposed at right angles, and B may be aluminium. The container may be a stainless steel sleeve with crimped ends. The container may be retained, or removed by machining or etching. Before enclosure, the assembly may be wrapped in a casing material. The assembly is placed between dies, which may be shaped, the dies then being heated under slight pressure to melt the aluminium. Bonding may take place at 690‹ C. and 8000 p.s.i. Molten aluminium is forced into the crimped ends of the sleeve. The assembly may be cooled under pressure. The dies may be pre-heated, and the pressing operation may be carried out under inert gas.
