Abstract

[Also in Division H4] In a rescue apparatus comprising a buoyant lifejacket and a radio beacon, the aerial of the beacon is of resilient material and its base is attached to the external surface of the jacket, and is so disposed thereupon that when in use, after release from a stowed position, it projects substantially vertically. The aerial may be a quarter- or a half-wavelength long, and it consists of a rod 10, Fig. 3, connected by a cable 22 to the beacon transmitter. It is hinged to a base member 12 and is normally held against the jacket 20 by a water-soluble fastening. It is urged vertically by a coil spring when released (Figs. 1, 2, not shown), and may be arranged to switch on the transmitter as it moves. In another embodiment the aerial is permanently fixed to the jacket, and is bent down when stowed.
