Abstract

1,250,718. Rolling mills. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 18 March, 1969 [20 March, 1968], No. 14231/69. Heading B3M. In a horizontal mill stand for a slab rolling mill, the chocks of the rolls are provided with corresponding pins 39 and recesses 40 to facilitate removal of the rolls from the stand. For removing the rolls, clamps 23 are released and a transverse beam 35, which supports the upper chocks 12 by depending hooks, is lowered by cylinder units 16. The chocks 12 engage with the pins 39 to couple the rolls together as a unit. The unit is lowered by pistons 22 until transverse tracks 25 are engaged by a sled 26 carrying the unit, the sled finally being removed fromthe stand. The stand may incorporate an hydraulic dump valve associated with the pistons 22, the valve preventing overloading of the stand components.
