1,250,219. Antibacterial &c. compositions. J. R. GEIGY A.G. 28 Jan., 1970 [6 Dec., 1968], No. 57941/68. Addition to 1,108,397. Heading A5B and A5E. [Also in Division C2] Antimicrobial nitrofuran derivatives of formula I: in which each of R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> is a C 1-5 alkyl group optionally carrying one or more halogen, hydroxy or C 1-5 alkoxy substituents, a C 3-4 alkenyl group or a cycloalkyl group, or one or two of R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> may be hydrogen, may be mixed with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers to form pharmaceutical compositions, or used to treat an organic material susceptible to bacterial or other microbial attack to protect the material from such attack. The organic material may be a natural or synthetic polymeric material, a proteinaceous or carbohydrate substance, or a natural or synthetic fibre or textile material formed therefrom. The pharmaceutical compositions have antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anthelmintic, coccidiostatic, antitrichomonal, trypanocidal and growthpromoting activity and may be in the form of ointments, powders, tinctures, solutions, emulsions, gargles, tablets, lozenges, dragees and capsules. The compositions may also contain other active ingredients such as 8-quinolinol derivatives, sulpha drugs, chloramphenicol or tetracycline or other antibiotics, halogenated salicylanilides, carbanilides, benzoxazoles or benzoxazolones, polychloro-hydroxy-diphenylmethanes, halogenhydroxydiphenyl sulphides or ethers, quaternary ammonium compounds or dithiocarbamic acid derivatives. Specific compounds are named. Carriers which themselves have pharmaceutical activity, e.g. sulphur and zinc stearate, can be used.
