Abstract

1,249,805. Two-part couplings. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 30 April, 1970 [8 May, 1969], No. 23546/69. Heading H2E. An electrical connector comprises two plastics blocks, Figs. 2, 4 carrying plug contacts 6 and socket contacts 16 respectively. One of the blocks is formed with two resilient limbs 8, 10 each having a barb 12, 14 at its free end which fits in a corresponding aperture 22, 24 in one of a pair of lugs 18, 20 on the other block. The crosssectional areas of the limbs 8, 10 and apertures 22, 24 are unequal to ensure correct coupling. The limb 8 is fitted with an electrical strip contact 30 held in a groove in the limb by a detent 34 in a recess 36. The end of the contact remote from an attached conductor is bent so as to lie on the limb surface and abut the barb 12. A corresponding contact 38 is fitted in the lug 18 on the other body by a detent 42 and connection between the contacts 30, 38 is not made until the two blocks are correctly mated, and this mating may be checked by an electrical continuity test on the circuit between contacts 30, 38. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 9, two plastics blocks 48, 50 house plug contacts 54 and socket contacts. A barb 58 on the body 48 engages in the aperture in a lug 76 on body 50 when the end 70 of body 50 is fitted within the end of the body 48. Contacts 62, 82 are crimped to conductors of cables 56, 68 and fit on the end of the body 48 and lug 76 respectively.
