[Also in Division F1] An hydraulic steering gear comprises two cylinders 8, or four cylinders arranged in pairs, with plunger pistons 1 rigidly interconnected and coupled to a tiller 12 on a rudder shaft 11, each plunger piston 1 being hollow, Fig. 2, and slidable over a piston 5 connected to cylinder head 7 by a hollow piston-rod 6. Oil under pressure supplied to cylinder space 15 through inlet valve 16 acts on the end cover 2 of plunger piston 1, and passes through piston-rod apertures 9 to plunger piston interior 17, via pistonrod bore 14 and piston passage 18, where it acts on the left-hand closed end of the plunger piston. The oil is discharged through outlet valve 16<SP>1</SP> during the return stroke. Leakage into space 20 passes through pipe 10 to reservoir 21 under atmospheric pressure. End cover 2 has a seal 4 surrounding piston-rod 6.
