Abstract

1,248,642. Extruding high molecular weight polymers. SUN OIL CO. 24 Oct., 1969 [20 Nov., 1968], No. 52132/69. Heading B5A. In the extrusion moulding of rods or tubes of high molecular weight thermoplastic polymers, i.e. polymers having no measurable melt index under the conditions of ASTM Method D 1238-65T, such a polymer is transported to the die of the extruder as discrete particles at a temperature below the melting point of the polymer, the polymer is heated and fused under pressure within the die to form a homogeneous molten mass at a temperature below the thermal degradation temperature of the polymer and subsequently, prior to extrusion, the polymer is cooled to a temperature below the melting point of the polymer. The polymers listed as having no measurable melt index under theabovementioned test conditions are polyethylene of molecular weight greater than 500,000, polypropylene of molecular weight greater than 400,000, polystyrene of molecular weight greater than 50,000, a polyester of molecular weight greater than 70,000, a polyamide of molecular weight greater than 90,000 and PVC of molecular weight greater than 50,000. The extrusion apparatus, which as shown forms a tubular extrudate 26, comprises up to the vicinity of the die 29 a screw 22 of constant diameter core, a heater 27 and a cooler 28, the screw preferably being chromium plated and the die being preferably chromium plated or coated with a fluorocarbon polymer. Some heating is effected by the mechanical work on the particles by the screw, but the particles are not melted prior to entry into die 29. The compression ratio between the screw and die is preferably within the range 0À2-0À9. Various tables of results are given.
