Abstract

1,248,203. Reducing iron ore. FINA METAL Ltd. 16 Oct., 1968 [19 Oct., 1967 (3)], Nos. 47738/67, 47739/67 and 47741/67. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C7] Finely divided natural hematite is purified by passage through a wet magnetic separator and is then reduced in the solid state to form a mass of loosely adhering iron particles, which may be disintegrated and subjected to impact densification in a hammer mill. Reduction may be carried out above 1600‹ F., preferably at 2000-2200‹ F. using a gaseous hydrogencontaining reductant or a solid carbonaceous reductant, or a combination of the two; it may be a two-stage process, possibly with densification after each stage, and as exemplified is carried out in an indirect gas-fired belt furnace using a layer of powdered carbon underlying the ore feed and a reducing gas atmosphere. The hematite may be ground before purification, which latter step preferably reduces the content of silica and other acid insoluble impurities to less than 0À2%.
