Abstract

1,247,751. Differential gearing. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. 10 June, 1969 [19 June, 1968], No. 29242/69. Heading F2D. A pneumatically operated positive lock-up clutch for a conventional motor-vehicle bevel gear differential 22-24 between a pair of driven axles 19, 21, comprises facially toothed clutch members 31, 27, the former 31 of which is rotatably fast (i.e. splined) with the axle 21 and is axially slidable therealong by pneumatic operation of a spring released annular piston 33 into lock-up engagement with the latter clutch member 27 splinted fast and bolted at 28 and 29 to the differential planet carrier 12. The piston 33 is secured against rotation by axial pins 42 fixed in an end cover 39 of a pneumatic cylinder 37, the piston 33 engaging the clutch member 31 through a thrust ring 34.
