[Also in Divisions Dl and G4] In a digital setting piston arrangement controlling translational movements e.g., of guide bars in warp knitting machines two digital setting piston systems 1, 2, each comprising e.g., three piston members 3, 4, 5; 6, 7, 8 whose strokes are stepped in accordance with powers of base 2 with corresponding pistons having the same stroke, operate in opposed directions on piston rods 12, 13 in response to complementary digital input signals. Digital input signal LOO deflects piston 3 by unit stroke away from abutment 9 leaving pistons 4, 5 undeflected, while complementary input signal OLL leaves piston 6 undeflected and deflects pistons 7, 8 away from abutment 10. The ends 11 of the piston rods are separated by 7 units when the pistons are initially at their closest to the abutments, and the translational movements derived from the digital piston settings are taken off by direct engagement with e.g., the guide bar 14 of the knitting machine. The individual piston members may be concentrically arranged, with movement take-off at a piston shaft end.
