Abstract

1,247,383. Stopping pipes. F. BANNER, and A. BANNER. 30 June, 1969 [21 June, 1968], No. 29669/68. Heading F2P. A method of sealing an end of a steam condenser tube 3 comprises introducing a tapered plug 1 of plastics material into a tapered bore in a sleeve 2 which is of a plastics material relatively flexible compared with the plug 1, inserting the sleeve 2 in the tube 3, and driving the plug 1 into the bore of the sleeve 2 to spread the latter into sealing contact with the tube 3. As shown, the sleeve 2 is precision moulded from polypropylene, has its external surface in the form of a right circular cylinder of a diameter substantially equal to the internal diameter of an unworn condenser tube 3, and has a tapered bore 5. The plug 1 is precision moulded from polyphenylene oxide, the inner surface having strengthening ridges 7 and the rear end having a strengthening rim 8. To seal an unworn condenser tube 3 the plug 1, preferably wetted, is introduced into the sleeve 2 alternatively, the sleeve 2 may be placed in the tube 3 before the plug 1 is introduced into it, the plug 1 then being driven into the sleeve 2. For use with a worn tube 3 the plug 2, preferably wetted, is driven into the sleeve 2 until the latter is expanded to provide an interference fit in the tube. The unit is then inserted into the tube and the plug 1 driven home. The plug and sleeve 1, 2, unit, once inserted, can be easily removed by punching out the front end 6 of the plug and cutting through the wall of the latter.
