Abstract

1,247,321. Powder metallurgy. FEDERALMOGUL CORP. Jan. 5, 1970 [Feb. 19, 1969], No. 522/70. Heading C7D. A molten metal or alloy e.g. Ni, Co or Fe superalloy is atomized under non-oxidizing conditions to form -100 mesh powder with an oxygen content < 100 p.p.m. The powder is packed in an evacuated deformable metal cylinder with a height to diameter ratio of 2:1 to 0À5:1 which is then heated and an axial force is applied parallel to the cylinder axis at a rate of 10-200 inches/ minute. The container is then removed from the compacted and hot forged metal body. The powder size is preferably 60 mesh to 10 microns and the atomizing, screening and packing in the cylinder is preferably effected in argon. The cylinder may be a stainless or mild steel and the particles are packed by vibrating under sonic or supersonic frequency. The assembly is heated to 2000-2500‹F. before deforming. Many examples of typical superalloys are specified.
