Abstract

1,247,242. Aerials. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 25 Feb., 1969 [26 Feb., 1968], No. 9941/69. Heading H4A. An aerial system providing a rotating radiation pattern of pre-determined shape comprises an array of radiating elements which are arranged in rows and columns, said array having a curved aperture at least along the rows. Each column of elements has an individual feed from a common source, each feed comprising a means for modulating the amplitude and phase of the energy it supplies. As described, in an application to a TACAN radio-navigation ground station, columns of open-ended rectangular waveguide sections or cavity backed slots are arranged around an axis 100, Fig. 1, to form a cylindrical array. Adjacent columns are staggered to reduce the circumferential pitch. A structure comprising end bells 101, which are joined by rod members, supports the columns of elements, and a curved planar skin and a radome 102 are provided. A wedgeshaped matching piece 202, Fig. 3, is fitted in each radiator, and a typical column feed 204 feeds input probes within the eight radiators shown through coaxial connections 311 from the output of a modulator 309, of the PIN diode type. Unmodulated R.F. energy from a generator 313 is fed by a line 312 to a divider 301 which supplies equal amounts of power to the column modulators by lines 306 &c. Discrete control signals are also supplied from a unit 302 to the modulators by lines 303 &c. Said modulator control signals comprise 15 Hz and 135 Hz components, the phase of each component varying progressively from column to column around the cylindrical array. An aerial radiation pattern having nine lobes and rotating in azimuth at 15 r.p.m. is produced. The vertical radiation pattern may be controlled by adjusting the relative amplitudes of the feeds to the radiators in the columns, and vertical scanning is obtainable by varying the carrier frequency. Circuit arrangements within the modulator control signal unit 302 are also described (Figs. 4, 5, 6, not shown). A 15 Hz oscillator is phase-locked to a 135 Hz master oscillator and each oscillator drives a quadrature phase generator. The modulator control signal for each modulator is obtained by mixing suitable amounts of quadrature components of each of the two modulating frequencies. Specification 1,197,613 is mentioned.
