Abstract

1,246,863. Winding webs. ANO-COIL Ltd. 15 July, 1969 [17 Aug., 1968], No. 35499/69. Heading B8R. [Also in Divisions B3 and F2] Apparatus for winding metal strip coils comprises a horizontally arranged winding mandrel 14 and drive means 12 therefor, and at least one strip guide channel 30 arranged on a frame 11 which carries the drive means said channel being U-shaped in cross-section and of such width that the strip is guided therein without lateral clearance and wherein a sliding friction brake 37 bears against the upper surface of the strip in the channel the strip being provided with a slack loop 42 upstream of the channel. The channel is formed by spaced bars 26 mounted on an adjustable stage 23 positioned by means of hand wheels 16 through gearing actuating slidable blocks and rods 20, 21 and 24. The bars consist of an upper metal rail attached to a lower chamfered bar of polytetrafluoroethylene. The stage is also coated with the latter antifriction material. The brake has a felt block 38 and is mounted on a cross-shaft 35 and pressed against the strip by a weight 34 adjustably mounted on an arm 33. Alternatively, adjustable spring pressure or vertically displaceable brake blocks 37 (Fig. 3) loaded with a weight 391 are used. The roll of strip to be coiled is mounted on a stand 43 and the loop 42 is maintained by two selenium cells 47, 48 which control a roll drive 41. A plurality of rolls may be provided and also a similar number of guide channels to enable a plurality of coils to be wound simultaneously. In another embodiment a rotatable disc 52 provided with three expandable mandrels 58 is driven by rack and pinion 55, 54 and an hydraulic cylinder 56. In position A (Fig. 3) of the disc the mandrel is provided with a device for attaching the metal strip consisting of a U-shaped rod 89 having adhesive on the outside and which is pushed over the front edge of one of the expanding plates 59 on the mandrel 58. The rods are fed from a magazine 90 (Fig. 5). In position B the strip is severed beyond the point of attachment and the strip is wound into a coil. Lastly the finished wound coils are removed from the mandrel in position C. The mandrels are rotated at position B by a motor 70 driving a friction wheel 74 which engages a friction wheel 66 on each mandrel. At position C an hydraulic cylinder 85 projects a pin 84 into the bore of the mandrel to collapse the expanded plates and so release the coil. At position B another hydraulically actuated pin 84 projects into the mandrel bore to move the mandrel cam slide 64 to expand the mandrel plates. The cutting device 91 at position B comprises an hydraulic cylinder 102 which reciprocates parallel rods 98 carrying a transverse horizontal cylinder 97 which reciprocates a cutting wheel 96 along a guide rod 92 which can be moved by the cylinder 102 to bear against the strip on the mandrel. For preventing the coil from unrolling after the winding process rolls of adhesive tape 108 are rotatably mounted above the strip guide channels. Reciprocable jaws 113 grip the protective foil 115 of the adhesive tape after the foil has been deflected around rollers 114 and the unprotected adhesive tape is free to stick to the strip 40. A reciprocable knife 118 severs the tape when necessary so that a length of tape is wound between the last coils of the strip and holds them together.
