Abstract
1,246,728. Alkylation - transalkylation. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 11 Feb., 1969, No. 7229/69. Heading C5E. In an alkylation-transalkylation process for the production of a mono-alkylated aromatic compound wherein an olefin-acting compound is reacted with an alkylatable aromatic in an alkylation zone in the presence of BF 3 and a BF 3 -modified anhydrous inorganic oxide, effluent from the alkylation zone is mixed with the effluent from a transalkylation zone and the mixed effluents are fractionated to provide unreacted aromatic, monoalkylated aromatic, and BF 3 ; at least a portion of the unreacted aromatic is recycled to the alkylation zone, monoalkylated aromatic is recovered as product; high MW polyalkylated aromatic compound is introduced into the transalkylation zone and reacted with the alkylatable aromatic in the presence of BF 3 and BF 3 -modined inorganic oxide and resulting transalkylation effluent passed to the mixing step; and a portion of the reacted and unreacted alkylation zone effluent recycled to the alkylation zone prior to fractionation of the effluent. The process is particularly applicable to the production of ethylbenzene by reaction of ethylene and benzene and of cumene by reaction of propylene and benzene.
