Abstract

1,246,724. Controlling electric heating elements. J. P. STEVENS & CO. Inc. 29 Jan., 1969, No. 4882/69. Heading H5H. [Also in Division G3] An arrangement for heating a selected area, e.g. an electric blanket, floor warming panel &c. comprises an insulated electrical heating element 7, arranged between first and second outer layers of an electrically non-conductive fabric, in series with a triac 16 across a main supply 15, 15<SP>1</SP> to which is also connected a temperature control means, e.g. a thermistor 17, mounted in the second layer of the fabric. Thermistor 6 is connected to an R.C. network R1, R2, C1, and controls the triac 16 with variable angular delay through a diac 18. Where the arrangement is used for a blanket the top layer 1 may be of decorative material and form a bedspread overhanging the sleeping area and the heater 7 is arranged between the bottom layer which carries the thermistor and the top. The heater may be of flexible printed circuit configuration. The top layer may include an aluminium coated sheet to reflect heat downwards and an adjustable control (10) comprising a variable resistor 11 may be mounted at a suitable position. The heating element, thermistor, and control (10) may terminate in a plug (20), the mating socket (12) of which houses the remainder of the circuit elements. In an alternative arrangement the temperature control (10) which may include an indicator light and a control switch may be mounted on the socket 12. The circuit elements may also be formed by printed circuit techniques. The three layers of the blanket may be detachable from each other for cleaning purposes by zippers, snaps or "velevo" binders, or may be secured by sewing or thermoplastic bonding.
