Abstract
1,246,209. Amplifiers; automatic phase Control. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 26 Nov., 1969 [21 May, 1969], No. 25826/69. Headings H3A and H3W. Phase distortion in a high frequency power amplifier is reduced by applying signals derived from the input and output to a phase discriminator, the output of which controls a voltage controllable phase shifter connected in the input path of the amplifier. Power amplifier 5 is fed via hybrid power splitter 1, a switched attenuator 2, voltage controllable attenuator 3 and voltage controllable phase-shifter 4. Its output is taken sampling circuit 6, the output of which is taken via attenuator 7 and low-pass filter 8, eliminating harmonics of the signal frequency, to one input of a phase quadrature detector 10. The second input to phase quadrature detector 10 is derived from hybrid power splitter 1 via a delay circuit 11 giving the same delay as that over the path through power amplifier 1: its output controls phase-shifter 4. In addition amplitude distortion is reduced by applying the outputs from low-pass filter 8 and the hybrid power splitter 1 to an envelope detector 9 which detects any difference in amplitude and applies a correcting voltage to voltage controllable attenuator 3. The arrangement is more particularly intended for single and independent side band transmitters.
