Abstract
1,246,158. Disc brakes. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 10 June, 1969 [25 June, 1968; 8 May, 1969], No. 29240/69. Heading F2E. In a disc brake comprising a rotatable body 2, a fixed axle 1 rotatably supporting the body, a stack of discs 15, 17 splined in alternating relation respectively to the axle and the body, and means to press the discs together, each disc is made from a carbon based material of substantially uniform composition in cross-section having a density greater than 1À45 grams per cubic cm. but less than 2À5 grams per cubic cm., a specific heat greater than 0À17 cal/gm./‹ C. a thermal conductivity greater than 0À04 cal/ sec. cm.<SP>2</SP>/‹ C., a flexural strength greater than 5000 p.s.i., an impact strength greater than 35 inch pounds per inch, and a friction coefficient of at least 0À10 between adjacent discs over an operating range of from -65‹ F to 4000‹ F. As shown, the non-rotatable axle 1 is formed with a torque flange 5 to which is secured a pressure plate 8, bolts 12 extending through the plate, a back plate 9 and a torque tube 13; spring or Belleville washers 14 are disposed about each bolt and between the plate 9 and the tube 13. The latter is secured to the plate 8. A plurality of brake discs 15 have outer peripheral notches for receiving keys 16 on the wheel 2 and secondary brake discs 17 have notches for engagement with splines on the tube 13. An annular cylinder 19 and piston 21 operating on the bolts 12 cause the plates 8, 9 to be drawn together. Each disc may be of carbon particularly in the form of graphite or amorphous carbon, or carbon compounds such as boron, silicone and titanium carbide. In addition to the carbon base other ingredients may be used such as boron, tungsten silicone carbide or titanium, binders, fillers, reinforcing fibres and high temperature strengthening agents such as tungsten metal or silicone carbide. To prevent oxidation of the discs around the notches therein a coating covering the non-rubbed surface of the disc is applied as by slurry techniques, electrolysis, electroplating, plasma spray, spluttering and vapour depositions, and typical coatings include electrolysis nickel and electroplated chrome, electroplated nickel and chrome flash, chromium and chromium oxide, silicon carbide, silicon metal, electroplated nickel over copper and electroplated cadmium over nickel. For strengthening the load bearing portions of the discs, straps 32 riveted to the area in the vicinity of the notches are used; the discs 30 may consist of segments 30a, 30b and 30c.
