Abstract

1, 245, 697. Measuring angular displacement electrically. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Feb. 4, 1970 [Feb. 19, 1969], No. 8881/69. Heading G1N. A transducer for measuring angular displacement of a shaft 2, Fig. 1, comprises a circular plate 1 of magnetic material and of varying thickness, centrally attached to the shaft and facing diametrically located coils 4, 5 on E-type cores 6, 7 whereby the inductances of the coils vary differentially with rotation of the shaft 2 and plate 1. The coils are connected in an A. C. bridge circuit, or form the two halves of the primary of a differential transformer. Further coil assemblies such as 4-7 may be located, displaced by 90 degrees, to obtain unambiguous measurements over 360 degrees. The variation in thickness of plate 1 may be other than linear.
