Abstract

1,245,495. Cutting apparatus. DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORP. 10 Jan., 1969, No. 1701/69. Heading B4B. A device for cutting-out samples from a moving web of material comprises a number of cutters 54 mounted on a member 20 which is rotatable in a housing 24 under the action of a torsion spring 18, and pins 46 arranged to support the cut sample in the housing. The cutters 54 are each mounted on arms 52 of the member 20 which is rotatably mounted on a shaft 40. A pin 55 extends from one of the arms and engages with one end 74 of the spring 18, the other end of the spring being connected to a ratchet wheel 64; the ratchet wheel is adapted to be rotated, in order to load the spring, by means of a pawl-and-lever device 69, 70. The housing 24 is slidably mounted on pins 32 connected to a handle 16, the housing being urged into the position shown in Fig. 5 by springs 38 thereby maintaining a stop 58 on the housing in engagement with the pin 55. A plate 22, carried by the shaft 40, is fitted with the pins 46. In use, the spring is wound by actuating the lever 69 and the device then pressed against the web of material thereby first causing the pins 46 to pierce the material and then, upon further pressure on the device, causing the housing to move upwardly against the action of the springs 38 so as to allow the stop 58 to release the pin 55. The blades are then rotated rapidly to cut a circular sample from the web.
