Abstract

1,245,373. Moulding abrasive wheels. NORTON CO. 16 Jan., 1970 [16 Jan., 1969], No. 2174/70. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C4] An abrasive tool e.g. a grinding wheel preferably has a density between 0À22 and 3À48 gm/cc. and comprises particles of resilient cellular thermoset organic polymer containing abrasive grains, the particles being bonded by a cured resilient organic polymeric binder. The foamed polymer is preferably polyurethane and the binder may be foamed or unfoamed polyurethane or a phenol-formaldehyde condensation polymer. The tool is manufactured by foaming and curing a mixture abrasive particles and resilient organic polymer, shredding the foamed mixture to particles of 1/32-1/2 inch, coating the particles with the curable binder, placing the coated particles in a mould, applying pressure to the mould to compress the particles to the required density and curing the binder while the particles are compressed. The binder may be cured at room temperature or by heating depending on its chemical constitution. The weight ratio of abrasive to polyurethane in the foams is between 1:2 and 8:1, 10-20 wt. per cent of binder relative to the foam is added to the mixture and the final product has a volume ratio of abrasive to polyurethane (exclusive of porosity) between 1: 4 and 2: 1. The abrasive is preferably one of alpha alumina, silicon carbide, alumina-zirconia, garnet, quartz, boron carbide, emery or flint.
