Abstract

1,244,648. Frequency changers; radio receiving circuits. SIEMENS A.G. 17 Oct., 1968 [18 Oct., 1967], No. 49188/68. Headings H3Q and H3T. A superheterodyne signal amplifier has a frequency changer circuit in which selective frequency conversion is effected by a pulsescanned N-path filter operated at a scanning frequency which is a sub-harmonic of the signal frequency. A signal of frequency f 1' Fig. 1, applied to an input terminal E is fed to an N-path filter 1 which is scanned by scanning pulses from a scanning generator 2. The output of the N-path filter 1 is connected to a band-pass filter 3 which passes the frequency f 2 . The invention, which is stated to be particularly suitable for use as a second mixer stage in a double superheterodyne receiver, depends upon the property of the N-pass filter that if the input signal has the frequency, e.g. 3f 0 , where f 0 is the scanning frequency there will be in the output not only components of the frequencies 4# 0 , 5# 0 &c. but also the frequencies # 0 and 2# 0 . In a second embodiment the N-path filter is followed by three band-pass filters giving outputs at different frequencies (Fig. 2, not shown). A further embodiment comprises an A.F./F.M. receiver which comprises a double superheterodyne on F.M., the incoming signal f 1 , Fig. 3, being converted to a first intermediate frequency ZF 1 in a first mixer 31, and passed via band-pass filter 33 and switch S to a second frequency changer, comprising N-path filter 1 having scanning generator 2, the second intermediate frequency ZF 2 being selected by bandpass filter 35. A.M. signals of frequency f 1 <SP>1</SP> are converted directly to the final intermediate frequency 2F2 by means of mixer 32 which is followed by band-pass filter 34. The output of filter 34 is fed via switch S in reversed position to N-path filter 1, which on this waveband operates purely as a filter.
