Abstract

1,244,543. Crystallizing sugar. SOC: FIVES LILLE-CAIL. Dec.4, 1969 [Dec. 6, 1968], No. 59309/69. Heading C6B. In sugar crystallizing apparatus, a portion of the massecuite extracted from a crystallizer 10 is drawn off by a pump 16 and, after thinning by the addition of undersaturated syrup and hot water via regulator 18, is supplied to a grinder 20 which grinds the crystals within the mother liquor of the massecuite to a predetermined size suitable for seeding the syrup being fed into the crystallizer continuously at A, the resulting magma being supplied at B to the crystallizer via a feed regulating device, such as the pot 22, which is equipped with a level regulating means which avoids the entry of air into the crystallizer, the interior of which is preferably under vacuum. In place of the pot there may be used a mixing chamber (22<SP>1</SP> or 22<SP>11</SP>, Fig.3, (not shown) so that undersaturated syrup and hot water may be added both ahead of the crusher and between the crusher and the crystallizer, via the regulator (18<SP>1</SP>). The pump 16 is automatically regulated as a function of the quantity of syrup admitted to the crystallizer at A, a pump 12 delivering the remainder of the massecuite to a mixer 14. The grinder preferably comprises a continuously-operating rotary drum (24), Fig.2, (not shown) containing grinding balls (28) arranged in a number of compartments separated from one another by grids (26).
