In a tape transport of the roll-to-roll type, Fig. 1, the supply roll 14 is contained in a cartridge 48 which is urged towards the tapefeeding means, e.g. capstan 13, the take-up roll 16 being formed outside the cartridge 48. As shown, the capstan 13 engages the periphery of the supply roll 14 through a window in the cartridge 48 and drives the tape past guide blocks 91, 94 and a resiliently mounted transducer assembly 93 to a take-up hub 68. A spring 53 acts through pivoted arms 54, 67 to urge the tape rolls 14, 16 towards the capstan 13. Friction in the mounting of the arms 54, 67 opposes the advancing and retreating movements of the rolls 14, 16 so that the capstan 13 exerts a greater thrust on the take-up roll than on the supply roll. Fast rewind is initiated by rotation of a knob 103 to swing a reverse gear (107, Fig. 2) into operative position. Loading and unloading of a cartridge 48 in guides 63 is facilitated by manual withdrawal of the arm 54 (by means of a knob 59, Fig. 2). In an alternative construction, Fig. 12, the tape rolls are contained in separate cartridges 120 urged towards a capstan 113 by a spring (132, Fig. 15) acting through catches 136 which are rotatable to permit loading and unloading of the cartridges. A frame, Fig. 10, detachably carries a plurality of such assemblies 111 with their capstans 113 in contact with rollers 167 which engage pairs of rollers 169, 171 so that, by means of electromagnetic clutches (Figs. 20 to 22), each capstan 113 may be driven in either direction by one or other of a pair of counterrotating shafts 172, 173 or braked by a stationary shaft 168. The belt-drive (Figs. 18 and 19) to the shafts 172, 173 is such that reversal of the direction of rotation of the drive motor (189) changes the speed but not the direction of rotation of the shafts.
