Abstract

1,244,322. Double hung sliding sash windows. SEASON-ALL INDUSTRIES Inc. 8 Aug., 1968 [11 Aug., 1967], No. 37906/68. Heading E1J. In a double-hung sliding sash window with meeting horizontal rails in the closed position of the window, the gap between these two rails, top rail 12 of the lower sash 6 and bottom rail 13 of the upper sash, is closed by a "floating" interlock bar 75 slidingly supported as by groove 78 on the bar engaging on a projection 73 on the rail 12, the bar having a downwardly projecting flange 81 which interengages with an upwardly projecting flange 82 on the rail 13 so as to close the gap between the two rails. Sealing strip 57 on the floating bar 75 form seals with the side and projection 82 of the rail 13 and other seals may be provided between the floating bar and projection 73, there being stops in the form of adjustable grub screws 84, 86, Fig. 5 on the ends of the bar 75 to limit its movement on the projection 73, with a compression spring 87 between the grub screw 86 and the adjacent end of the projection 73, so that as the lower sash is moved in the direction of arrow 88, for the purpose of removing the sash from the frame. The spring is compressed and after release of the sash the bar 75 is returned to its normal position on the rail 12. End caps 91, 92 (Fig. 7 not shown) cover the ends of the bar. The invention is described as incorporated in a counter-balanced sash window in which the sashes slide in jamb sash guide channels formed by outer flanges 103 and a jamb divided strip 90 (see left hand side of Fig. 3) and web 101 with a counter balance 17 in each channel of one jamb (left hand side of Fig. 3), each channel of the right jamb having inturned flanges 18 on the strip 90 to cooperate with guides on the adjacent (right) stiles of each sash and a longitudinal slot on the other (left) stiles of the sashes to receive respective couter balances 17, the floating bar 75 engaging at its end 91 the left divided strip 90 to move the bar toward the opposite (right) flange 18 upon insertion of the sash in the jamb sash guide channels to receive the counter balances 17 and position the sash guides on the flanges 18, the bar 75 then being retained between the bolt divider strips 90. A second 'floating' bar may be provided similarly to bar 75 on the rail 13, the two floating bars interengaging to close the gap between the two meeting rails 12, 13. The window construction is intended as a replacement in a shell from which an old window has been removed and for features of the window frame see abridgement of Specification 1,244,323. For features of the counter-balance arrangements see abridgment Specification 1,244,324 and for features of the sash guiding and arrangements for removing the sashes from the frame see abridgment Specification 1,244,325.
