Abstract

1,243,980. Direction indicator switches. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 9 Dec., 1968 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 57863/67. Heading G4Q. [Also in Division H1] A direction indicator switch for a road vehicle includes two pivot pieces 12, 24 movable about axes at right angles to each other to operate contacts, an operating member 27, 15 pivotally mounted on pivot piece 12 to pivot about an axis at right angles to that about which piece 12 pivots, and means interconnecting operating member 27, 15 and pivot piece 24 so that pivotal movement of operating member 27, 15 about pivot piece 12 is transmitted to pivot piece 24 while movement of operating member 27, 15 to move pivot piece 12 is not transmitted to pivot piece 24. As shown, piece 12 pivots about integral lugs 13 and has cams 41, 42 which move leaf spring contacts 38, 39, Fig. 2 (not shown), to operate the headlamps. Piece 12 has three positions, one with lever 27 depressed from the position shown in which the main beam headlight circuit is energized through contacts 37, 38, Fig. 2, and piece 12 is latched in that position by a projection 43 on piece 12 being below a rib on flexible leg 44 of body 11 of the switch; a second position as shown in which the dipped beams are energized through contacts 37, 39, Fig. 2, and piece 12 is latched in this position by projection 43 being above the rib on leg 44; and a third position with lever 27 raised from the position shown in which the headlights are flashed through contacts 38, Fig. 2, and a further contact (not shown) since spring pressed plunger 45 retracts piece 12 from the third position when lever 27 is released. The means interconnecting operating member 27, 15 and pivot piece 24 comprises lugs 28, one on each side of member 27, 15 so that when lever 27 is turned about a vertical axis pivot piece 24 is turned to move bridging contact 31, Fig. 4 (not shown) from a central off position to either of two positions in which the direction indicators are energized. Piece 24 is latched in the three positions by cam track and ball 33, 34, Fig. 1 (not shown). Piece 24 has two arms 35, 36, Figs. 1, 4, attached which are struck by a striker (not shown) on the steering wheel shaft to return the piece 24 to its central off position. On the end of lever 27 is a pushbutton switch (not shown) for the horn, lead 46 and earth lead 47 from which pass through the centre of member 15.
