Abstract

1,242,804. Telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. 1 July, 1970 [20 May, 1969], No. 25664/69. Heading F2S. A tube-within-a-tube hydraulic shock absorber with valves (not shown) in the piston and the base, has a flow restrictor 16-24 which is adjustable manually from outside the shock absorber by turning a metal ring 34 of control member 26. The ring is open and the two free ends engage in depressions 30, 32 on the control member. As shown, the flow restrictor is located in the reservoir 14, and meters flow from the space in the pressure tube 10 behind the piston back into the reservoir. The control member 26 has a variety of radial ports 28 which, when the member is rotated by the ring 34, can be aligned with a radial port 22 in the valve housing 18. The metal ring 34 is of triangular shape and is loosely engaged in the depressions so that it can lie flat against the shock absorber outer tube 12 when not in use.
