Abstract

1,242,764. Two-part couplings. AMERACE ESNA CORP. 22 April, 1969 [21 May. 1968]. No. 20542/69. Heading H2E. An electrical connector element 34, co-operating with a complementary part 20 connected to a high-voltage cable 10, comprises a cavity 66 divided into a first chamber 74 and a second chamber 76 with a valve 81 connecting them, such that gas generated in chamber 74 by arcing during connection or disconnection may be vented into chamber 76. An electrical contact 39 in the form of a metallic socket 40 having segments 42 biased radially inwardly by spring 44 is housed in the outer body portion 38 of a housing 36. and is integral with a metallic tubular member 68 having an end wall 72. An opening 80 in the end wall is normally closed by the valve 81 comprising a ball 82 biased by a spring 84. A small clearance between the seating 88 and the ball 82 permits a slow leakage of gas from chamber 76 back to chamber 74 when the ball rests on its seating. A second embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) has tubular members (152, 164) forming a first chamber (174) and a second chamber (176) with a valve (181) and a narrow passage (189) to allow a slow leakage of gas back into the first chamber. Yet another embodiment has a plurality of apertures 280 (Fig. 5) normally closed resiliently by an annular member 282, e.g. of elastomeric material, which opens apertures 280 at the incidence of a sudden high pressure in the first chamber. A porous plug 288 provides the leakage path for gases back into the first chamber, this arrangement being a modification of a loosely fitted screw (284, Fig. 4, not shown).
