Abstract
1,242,664. Electric-discharge treatment of polymeric webs. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 8 May, 1969 [13 May, 1968], No. 23555/69. Heading D1L. [Also in Disivions B2, G2 and H1] The surface of a synthetic organic polymeric web, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate film or polyethylene coated paper, is subjected to an a.c. corona discharge and thereafter the irregularities in the electrostatic charge on the surface are smoothed before coating with an aqueous composition, e.g. a photographic layer. As disclosed the web is passed through apparatus comprising a dielectric - coated earthed roll over which the web passes and near which are electrode(s) at, e.g. 50kV (peak to peak), 60Hz. The surface charge so obtained is smoothed by (i) a metal roll at, e.g. 5-50 kV d.c. over which the treated surface of the web is passed and near which are earthed electrodes and/or (ii) an ion generator, through the ion cloud of whch the web is passed. An earthed metal roll may be provided after the d.c. field, the latter suitably being such as to produce a corona discharge. Treatment improves adhesion of the coating. An ion generator comprises a metallic backing electrode 20, spaced electrode wires 22 supported on a frame 24 and a perforated control screen 21 located below the wires. In use, a high voltage a.c. is applied across electrodes 20, 22 while screen 21 is earthed or held at a selected potential. Some of the ions produced pass through the screen onto the charged surface of the web 10 which passes below it.
