Abstract
1,242,663. Pulping cellulosic material. UNIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION. 9 Jan., 1969 [9 Jan., 1968; 25 Nov., 1968], No. 1285/69. Heading D2W. [Also in Division C2] A process for producing pulp from lignincontaining cellulosic plant material comprises contacting the material with a dilute, aqueous solution containing both phosphoric and nitric acids, to form a lignin reaction product which is highly soluble in alkaline solution. The reaction of the acid solution may be stopped by contact with an aqueous, alkaline solution containing K+ and NH 4 OH. Some or all of the lignin reaction product may be dissolved out in an alkaline solvent inert to the cellulose. A preferred method includes the steps of: (a) treating the cellulosic material with steam; (b) immersing it in an alkaline solution containing K+ and NH 4 OH; (c) removing the material from the solution; (d) treating with steam; (e) treating with the acid mixture; (f) removing the impregnated material from the acid solution; (g) heating the impregnated material; (h) adding, with agitation, a hot alkaline solution containing K<SP>+</SP> and NH 4 OH; (i) recovering the material; and (j) recovering the liquid effluent from each of the process steps. Step (d) may be omitted.
