Abstract
1,242,285. Control of A.C. motors. LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - G.m.b.H. 30 Sept., 1968 [29 Sept., 1967], No. 46301/68. Heading H2J. [Also in Division G3] In an inverter controlled motor drive for a machine which is to be operated in a speed range which is a fraction (e.g. 30%) of the whole rated speed range of the motor and which requires a torque falling with the speed, the motor being fed with variable voltage and frequency by a forced commutated inverter-the motor is designed and constructed with such a relatively small stator/rotor air gap and air gap flux density and is supplied with such a low magnetization current that over the whole said fractional speed range, with the inverter output voltage maintained constant, the motor current including no load current is never greater than the motor current at the rated speed of the motor. Compared with the motor designed to operate at the normal rated full speed, the present motor has an increased number of stator turns in order that it will operate .at a specific applied voltage with reduced flux density and magnetizing current. This increases the back e.m.f. of the motor which is said to reduce harmonics in the inverter current. Also the short circuit reactance of the motor is increased and further limits overload peaks occurring across the thyristors at the moments of forced commutation. As shown, Fig. 1, the inverter is supplied with rectified constant voltage Ud via a smoothing or buffer capacitor C. Each of the controlled rectifier cells 1 to 6 comprises thyristors connected as shown in Fig. la and a quenching capacitor. Diodes 7 to 12 pass reactive current. The speed of the motor M is compared with a desired value in a known manner in a control unit St which controls the firing and quenching of the thyristors accordingly.
