Abstract

1,242,243. Centrifugal pumps. LITTLE GIANT CORP. Aug.9, 1968, No.38099/68. Heading F1C. [Also in Division H2] A centrifugal pump driven through a magnetic coupling 11 by an electric motor 9 (see Division H2) comprises an impeller 61 which, together with the driven magnet 63 of the couplings, is freely rotatable on a shaft 39. The impeller is preferably of plastics material and has a hub extension 64 carrying the annular magnet 63. The magnet is either embedded in the hub or is coated with plastics material on its free surfaces. The pump chamber is formed by a pump housing 43, preferably of plastics material, and a non-magnetic shield 35, also preferably of plastics material, separating the magnets of the coupling. The pump housing is secured to the shield by stud bolts 46 and co-operating wing nuts 48 or plastics material screws 80, Fig.4 (not shown). The shaft 39 may be loosely mounted between the shield 35 and a spider 54 mounted in or formed integrally with the pump housing. Alternatively the shaft may be mounted at one end in a manner to prevent rotation or may be formed integrally with the shield or spider. When formed separate from the shield and spider, the shaft may be made of metal resistant to wear and attack from the pumped fluids, e.g. water or beverages.
