Abstract

1,242,234. Abrasive articles. NORTON ABRASIVES Ltd. 19 Dec., 1968 [21 Dec., 1967], No. 58016/67. Heading C4V. [Also in Divisions B3 and C7] An abrasive article, such as a grinding wheel for operation by grinding and electrolytic erosion, comprises electrically conductive material, non-diamond abrasive and diamond, the last being in lesser proportion by volume than the non-diamond abrasive and the diamond content in the usable portion of the article being less than 3.125% by volume. The diamond proportion may be less than 1 %. The body 3 of a cup wheel, Fig. 1, comprises an electrically conducting non-diamond abrasive containing composition; at spacings of, e.g. 90 degrees, arc inserts 4 extending over the annular operative surface 2. The inserts may be formed of the same composition as the body except that part or all of the non-diamond abrasive is replaced by diamond. A cylindrical grinding wheel, Fig. 2, has diamond containing inserts 8. To provide the inserts 4, 8, slots may be cut in the wheel and preformed inserts cemented into place; the cement may or may not be electrically conducting. Preferably, however, the diamond containing composition is incorporated in the " green " wheel body prior to moulding. Abrasive articles may be made by standard powder metallurgy techniques; when wheels are required which may be dressed to special forms, synthetic resin bonded wheels may be made, e.g. as described in Specification 991,143. The conducting material may be a metal, e.g. copper, bronze or silver, or may be graphite. The metal or graphite may serve also as bonding agent. In the manufacture of a wheel as in Fig. 2 the body is produced having the composition:- Slots are cut in the wheel body to accommodate the inserts 8 which are preformed and have the composition :- The amount of diamond contained in the inserts is equivalent to 0À2% by volume of the usable portion of the wheel.
