[Also in Division H2] In a centrifugal pump, the impeller hub 21 or shaft 11 is formed with at least one axial groove 22 communicating with a radial bore 23 to provide a flow passage between the high-and low-pressure sides of the pump, which groove is dimensioned to allow air flow but prevent significant liquid flow therethrough. Thus, during operation, any air trapped in high pressure space 6<SP>1</SP> and, due to centrifugal effects, collecting around the shaft, is withdrawn through the groove 22, thereby reducing cavitation and consequent damage and noise. The radial bore 23 acts as a pump to withdraw liquid from the groove 22. Liquid for lubricating radial and thrust bearings 12, 13 is supplied from the space 6<SP>1</SP> through filter 18, axial bores 17' and radial grooves 26 into the space 17 within gap tube 16, and returns via radial grooves 27, bearing clearance, radial bores 24 and axial bore 25. Air trapped in the space 17 is withdrawn via the lubricanting-flow return path. The bores 24 are dimensioned to permit only a small liquid flow therethrough.
