Abstract

1,241,541. Producing embossed fibrous sheets. I.W.S. NOMINEE CO. Ltd. 17 July, 1968 [19 July, 1967], No. 33123/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] A fibrous sheet having thereon or therewithin a pattern of plastics material is compressed, the plastics material being flowable during the compression and being allowed to harden subsequently to locally bond the fibres together, and the compressed sheet is then wetted with water or steam so that it increases in thickness in those areas not having the hardened plastics material. The sheet may be felted, knitted or woven or a batt and its fibres may be animal, e.g. wool, vegetable, or synthetic, e.g. polyamide or polyester. The plastics material may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl halide or may be an uncured phenolic or aminoplast resin which is heat hardened after the compression step. The plastics material may be applied in the form of a perforated sheet, or a woven or non-woven net in which case it is rendered flowable by heat from the compressing platens or rolls. Alternatively the plastics material may be flowable on application by embossed or engraved rolls, or spraying or wiping through stencils or pattern-positioned nozzles. The plastics material may be located between two fibrous sheets.
