Abstract

1,241,234. Terminals. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. 11 March, 1969 [11 March, 1968; 26 June, 1968], No. 12657/69. Heading H2E; [Alsb in Division B3] Electrical connections to the conductors 14 of a printed circuit board 10 are made by a T-shaped terminal 20 stamped from copper, brass or other malleable metal of thickness such as to be an easy sliding fit in a dovetailed slot 16 cut in the edge of the board 10. The length of the head 21 of the terminal is greater than the thickness of the board so that the head may be deformed or upset when in the slot by pressure on end faces 23, so that it becomes an interference fit in the slot and becomes Connected to the conductor 14. The conductor may be continued into a bevelled or relieved edge (27, Fig. 8, not shown) of the slot so that the head of the terminal becomes flush with the surface (11) of the board 10. Each end of the head 21 may be split into wings (37, Fig: 11, not shown) pressed against the board surface or into the bevel by suitable pressure plates during upsetting; or each end may be extended by a tab (41, Fig. 12, not shown) to be folded into a side groove (42) after the upsetting operation.- A solder or similar coating (15) may be used to reinforce the electrical connection and the mechanical strength of the arrangement; Each slot may alternatively be of rectangular; dovetail, or keyhole form; or may be replaced by a hole (136) drilled through the board and intersected by a second hole (138) from the edge of the Board (Figs: 23-25, not shown): The terminal may consist of a straight pin (121) deformed in the groove of hole and to which a portion (122). is then percussively are welded at right angles (Figs: 21 and 26; not shown).
