Abstract

1,239,227. Two-part couplings. THOMAS & BETTS CORP. 29 Aug., 1968 [29 Aug., 1967], No. 41273/68. Heading.H2E. In an electrical connector for making connections between two tape cables, or a tape cable and a printed circuit board, alternate conductors of the cable or board are connected to a common earth contact, the impedance of the connector being fixed at a predetermined value. An insulating housing made of half shells 10 and 12, each having an axial slot (18), 22 and an inner cavity 16 (20), houses an inner connector assembly 14. The assembly 14 comprises a dielectric spacer bar 36, its composition and dimensions in part determining the impedance, individual spring contacts 42 being located on one side of the bar and an earth plate 32 having spring elements 34 being located on the other, both sets of contacts being held in position by insulating strips 28, 46. The inner assembly is held in the cavities 16 (20) of the half shells by locating elements 50 engaging recesses 52 in the end pieces 38 and 40 of the spacer bar 36. The tape cable on a rigid board, or printed circuit board, is inserted into either side through the apertures 22 (18) and between the contacts 42 and 34 which are longitudinally staggered so that each conductor of the cable will only contact one of the contacts of each set. The half shells may be secured together by suitable fastening means, e.g. bolts through holes 26.
