A rotary bit has disc-shaped cutters 3 mounted in sockets 2 so that only a portion of each cutter projects from the body of the bit, the plane of the cutting edge 7 of each cutter being inclined rearwardly relative to the direction of normal rotary movement of the bit. Each cutter comprises a hard metal cutting ring 6 on a steel disc 5. A spring washer 4, or a nut which may prevent rotation of the disc during drilling, is secured to the shank 8 of each cutter.
