1,238,511. Heterocyclic polyamides. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 4 June, 1968 [24 June, 1967; 5 Dec., 1967; 13 Feb., 1968; 19 Feb., 1968], No. 26435/68. Heading C3R. Polyamides contain the recurrent structural unit where Ar represents a bivalent aromatic radical; X is A is O, S or =NR; R is H, a C 1-6 aliphatic radical or an aromatic radical; B is -Ar-, -Ar-O-Ar-, -Ar-SO 2 -Ar- or -Ar- O-Ar-SO 2 -Ar-O-Ar; Y and Z are -O- or -SO 2 -; and m and n are 0 to 6 but not both O They may be prepared by reacting an acid dihalide with a stoichiometric amount of a diamine H 2 N-(Ar-Z)m-Ar-X-Ar-(Y-Ar)n-NH 2 in a polar organic solvent at - 30‹ to +150‹ C. It is also possible to use such diamines wherein X is -CO-NH-NH-CO- with subsequent cyclization of diacylhydrazine group(s) to oxadiazole rings at above 200‹ C. Numerous starting materials and solvents are specified and the preparation of the diamines used is described. Films and filaments may be obtained directly from the solution of the polymer in the reaction solvent. In examples, polymers having relative viscosities between 1À42 and 3À15 are obtained from iso- or tere-phthalic acid chloride and various diamines. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,104,411.
