Abstract

1,238,326. Filter. N. O. ROSAEN and B. O. ROSAEN. 13 Aug., 1968 [21 Aug., 1967; 14 March, 1968], No. 38583/68. Heading B1D. A filter comprises two semi-cylindrical, pleated, wire cloth filter elements mounted on opposite sides of a partition 26 which is periodically rotated in response to clogging of the element in chamber 34, which communicates with inlet 18 and outlet 20 for liquid being filtered, to move the clogged element into chamber 36, wherein its outer, upstream surface is continually subjected to a jet of filtrate delivered from connection 122 by pump 124 to nozzle 128, the clogged element being also backwashed, when it comes to rest in chamber 36, by filtrate injected through passage 104 from a cylinder 100, whose piston (106) (Fig. 1, not shown) is advanced against spring-loading by fluid pressure. Clogging of the operative element is detected and externally indicated by device (130) illustrated in Figs. 3, 6 (not shown) which incorporates a pressure-operated by-pass valve, and movement of the indicating needle closes a switch (158) to start the motor which rotates the partition and elements. A simple circuit (Fig. 5, not shown) keeps the motor running until the elements have turned almost 180 degrees, the movement being completed by intertia after a cam 86 has opened switch (160). Piston (106) is advanced automatically once the elements come to rest. Cylinder 100 has an air bleed valve which is held open while the filter is operating and thereafter closed to prevent drainage of the liquid from the cylinder. A solids-receiving sump 96, transparent inspection window 92 and housing drain valve (90) are provided. The filter elements are secured to the partition by sliding C-clips engaging respective pairs of J-clips (Fig. 3) and are supported between perforate retainers. Spring loaded vanes (46, 50) seal between the partition and the housing. Figs. 7 to 13 (not shown) illustrate a second embodiment, connected in a closed circuit which includes a reservoir and a machine tool, supplied with coolant from the filter. A pump (280) delivers filtrate from the operative element to the nozzle (285) and to the backwashing cylinder (242) alternately through a two-way valve (282) (Fig. 9), the nozzle directing filtrate on to the upstream face of the elements only while they are moving. During backwashing of the inoperative element a valve (256), closed during element movement, opens and solids and backwashing liquid pass down conduit (248) into a felt bag (252), through which liquid filters into the reservoir (Fig. 7). Fig. 13 illustrates how the fluid pressure in the filtering chamber (232) is applied to the rear edges of the sealing vanes, of which one is metal and one rubber, a ball valve (340) moving along passage (334) to isolate the cleaning chamber (234). The ends of the filter element and partition plate assemblies make sliding contact with bearing plates, liquid leaking into lower bearing (306) is bled off into the cleaning chamber, and liquid being filtered is forced through the filter by an upstream or downstream pump.
