Abstract

1,238,200. Aerials. PATELHOLD PATENTVERWERTUNGS- & ELEKTRO-HOLDING A.G. 29 Nov., 1968 [1 Dec., 1967], No. 56879/68. Heading H4A. An aerial comprises a coaxial transmission line 2 the lower part 1 of the outer conductor 5 of which is subdivided into segments 6, 7 near its end by two diametrically opposite slots 3, 4 of lengths #‹/2 (# o = mean operating wavelength). The said lower part 1 is of larger internal diameter than the feeder line and a quarterwave transformer extending from the tops of the slots to a step 19 provides matching means. A transverse cross-sectional plane through the centres of the slots is termed the coupling plane, and a conductive member 9 centered thereon joins the segment 6 to the inner conductor 8 of the line. A short-circuiting disc 10 terminates the line at a distance of from 5/16#0 to 7/16 #0 from the coupling plane and provides capacitive coupling for the segment 7. The effective impedance valves of the couplings to the two segments are arranged to be equal and opposite at the mean operating frequency. A sleeve 13 has a base 16 which is level with the bottoms of the slots 3, 4 and it extends upwardly outside the outer conductor 5 of the line and past the slots. Additional coupling screw elements 11, 12 centered on the coupling plane are provided on the outsides of the segments 6, 7. An insulating cap on the sleeve 13 comprises a sleeve 17 and a frusto-conical end 18. Waves of the TE 11 mode are generated between the outer conductor 5 and the sleeve 13, and linearly polarized radiation is consequently directed upwardly. The aerial may be used as a primary feed for a parabolic reflector, and the insulating cap on the sleeve 13 may be so shaped as to improve the uniformity of illumination over the said reflector.
