An hydraulically operated garage lift, Fig. 2, has tracks 1 with end ramps 2 and wheel guides 3 attached at 5 to horizontally pivoted arms 4, the ends of which move in arcuate guide slots 6. The arms 4, Fig. 20, are pivoted by a rod 64 oppositely threaded at each end. One end of this rod is arranged to move over a scale which indicates the spacing of the guides. Pins which pass through holes 8, Fig. 2, lock the guides in position. The lifting frame 15 is raised by pairs of arms 10 pivoted by rams. The arms and rams may be arranged as shown in Figs. 8-11, (not shown). Struts 25, Fig. 12, hold the arms 10 in their raised position. The bottom of the struts may be pivoted instead of resting on a toothed rack 26. In this case a series of holes are provided in the arms 10. Fig. 15 shows an arrangement in which the struts 25 are automatically engaged in holes 27 by a spring loaded lever 30, 32 pivoted to the lifting ram. To lower the lift the lever is disengaged from the struts 25 by lifting the end 35. As a safety precaution, oil is discharged from the rams through a small orifice which retards the descent of the lifting frame.
