Abstract
1,237,783. Casting composite joints. ERICO PRODUCTS Inc. 17 July, 1968 [24 July, 1967], No. 34025/68. Heading B3F. Metal melted in a graphite crucible 30 passes into a recess 44 in a graphite pouring block 31, thence to an exit portion of a passage 45 which portion has within it a refractory (ceramic) sleeve 46 and from this the metal passes into a steel sleeve 3 which will be secured, by the metal solidifying, around the adjacent ends of two concrete-reinforcing rods 1, 2 to be joined. The exit portion of the block may be at a side surface. A Cu or Al tube 47 lines both the sleeve 46 and an inlet 5 into the sleeve 3. The crucible 30 and the block 31 may each comprise clamped halves and the ceramic sleeve 46 may also comprise separable halves, so as to be reusable instead of being knocked off with the sprue after casting. A starting powder 35 is ignited in the crucible 30 to melt an alloy powder 34 so that it burns through a steel closure disc 33 and flows through the block 31 into the sleeve 3 melting the metal liner 47 on the way. The ends of the bars 1, 2 are supported by a clamp 18-20 and the sleeve 3 is located by end fittings 6, 7, each comprising halves 8, 9 secured by a stud and nut 10 and including asbestos packing 17. In a modified arrangement for joining two vertical rods, a pouring block (63) with an inclined passage (71) is clamped to the side of the sleeve (50) and supported from a sleeve-supporting clamp (57).
