Abstract

1,237,250. 250. Detecting splits in tubing. POLYMER CORP. Oct. 1, 1968. No.46508/68. Heading G1S. Apparatus for detecting splits in tubing 1 comprises a cylinder 5 through which the tubing is continuously passed, a pump 17 for evacuating the cylinder, seals 8 to prevent air entering the cylinder and a vacuum gauge 12 for detecting a change in pressure in the cylinder. The seals 8 which are preferably made of rubber are mounted on glands 7 held on the ends of the cylinder by tie rods 9. The air is evacuated from the cylinder until the mercury 13 in the gauge 12 just fails to touch a contact 14. The tubing is then wound from reel 2 to reel 3 and if a split is present in the tube, the increase in pressure in the cylinder causes the mercury to touch the contact 14 thus completing a circuit through the contacts 14, 15 and switching off the power to the drive for the reels. The circuit also includes a flashing light or an audible alarm bell.
