Abstract

1,237,246. Pile driving hammers. VULCAN IRON WORKS Inc. 21 June, 1968 [3 July, 1967], No. 29689/68. Heading B3H. A pile driving hammer of the type including a cylinder housing defining a cylinder, a fluidoperated piston within the cylinder driving a ram and a valve means for controlling the fluid supply to the cylinder has a slide bar to control the operation of the valve means pivotally mounted on the ram. In the preferred form, Fig. 2, the lower end of the slide bar 30a is provided with upper and lower spherical surfaces 54, 55 which co-operate with corresponding surfaces 50, 51 within a gripper plug 40 inserted in the ram 17. The plug is preferably in two halves and the lower spherical surface 51 is formed on a removable end block 40c. The upper part of the gripper plug is tapered at an angle α with respect to the slide rod, the lower portion of which may also be tapered as shown.
