Abstract

1,237,129. Tunnelling. W. SMITH. 28 July, 1969 [29 April, 1968], No. 20323/68. Heading E1F. Tunnelling apparatus comprises a cutting head with cutting tools 26 rotatably mounted at the end of a cylindrical shield 10 about an axis transverse to the axis of the shield. The head may be of spherical shape and is divided into three axially spaced units to provide gaps for sprocket wheels 22 driven by chains 24. The shield 10 may have a cutting edge 29 and hydraulic rams 13, the plungers 14 of which bear against the tunnel lining. Conveyor 32 is provided.
