Abstract

1,237,091. Operating mechanism for rail vehicle service line valves. MINISTERIUM FUR VERKEHRSWESEN. 7 June, 1968, No. 27156/68. Heading B7T. An operating mechanism for rail vehicle service line valves is actuated by the vehicle central buffer couplers on coupling by a pushpull cable 32, said mechanism comprising a housing 22 adapted to be secured to the vehicle frame, a valve operating shaft 3 passing therethrough, a spring 15 in a casing 17 slidably mounted in the housing with the spring axis at right angles to the shaft 3, a two-armed lever 12 mounted to turn on the shaft with one arm connected by a bolt and slot coupling 14, 13 to the casing, an arm 23 pivoted at 20 to the housing and being biased upwardly by a spring 26, a pin 19 on the lever 12 engaged in a notch 28 of the arm in the ready-to-operate conditon of the mechanism, a shoe 9 on the casing bearing on the arm, and a rod 10 connecting the inner core of cable 32 with the spring 15 by means of a plate 16 slidable within the casing, the mechanism operating such that on a coupling operation the cable 32 causes the spring 15 to be compressed until the pressure of the shoe 9 depresses arm 23 to release the pin and notch engagement 19, 28 so that the spring and casing move together and the lever 12 is turned, the mechanism further comprising a second pin 7 on the lever 12 having a pawl 2 loaded by spring 6 thereon, a cam disc 1 pivoted on shaft 3, said disc having a slot 8 therein in which a projection 5 on the shaft engages and a notch in its edge into which the pawl engages, a control plate 4 for the pawl being mounted on the housing coplanar with the disc 1, said plate having a tooth 3 for engagement with the pawl, said pawl by engagement in the disc notch turning the cam disc through the movement of the lever 12 on a coupling operation, which disc by engagement with projection 5 turns the shaft 3 to open the valves, the pawl being pivoted by engagement with plate 4 as the disc reaches the valve-open position so that it leaves the notch. Spring means 11 are provided to return spring 15 and the casing to the initial portion on uncoupling, but the valves have to be closed by hand using a lever connected to shaft 3. To prevent the valves being opened on a coupling operation during shunting, the shaft 3 is turned anti-clockwise causing the pawl to engage tooth 31, thereby lifting it from engagement with the disc notch.
