Abstract

[Also in Division H4] In a radio tracking system (e.g. tracking satellites) a waveguide is coupled to the aerial and modes in the waveguide are utilized to afford signals representing tracking errors: according to one aspect of the invention the waveguide is circular and the modes are TM 01 and/or TE<SP>1</SP> 21 and TE 21 , and according to another aspect of the invention the waveguide is rectangular and the modes are TE 11 and TM 11 . The satellite radiation may be circularly or linearly polarized. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, the satellite radiation is linearly polarized, the aerial 2 is a conical horn, waveguide 3 is circular, a transverse slot 6 extracts TM 01 and TE<SP>1</SP> 21 received signal modes, a longitudinal slot extracts the TE 21 mode, receiving port 8 is coupled via an " orthogonal mode diplexer," and a communications transmitter is connected to port 9; this apparatus is connected via filters 14, 15, 16, Fig. 7, to a known static split direction-finder system incorporating phasesensitive detectors 26, 27 which give sense-only E and H plane error signal outputs. A rectangular waveguide system is described, Fig. 4 (not shown). For circularly polarized satellite radiation odd order modes are separated from the fundamental mode by magic-T technique: extensions of the pairs 4, 5, Fig. 5, form, for each pair, a magic-T the other arms of which are 10, 12 for pair 4 and 11, 13 for pair 5. The fundamental mode TE<SP>1</SP> 11 is obtained from arms 10, 11, the TE 21 mode from arm 12, and the TM 01 mode from arm 13. To prevent disturbance of the sum received signal on diplexer output guide 8, the TE<SP>1</SP> 11 signals are reflected back into guide 3 by means not shown. In a modification coupling slots 6, 7 are not displaced by 90 degrees as in Fig. 5 but lie along the same axial line, Fig. 6 (not shown). A parabolic reflector may be added.
