Abstract

1,236,657. Shaft couplings. DAVID BROWN GEAR INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 Nov., 1969 [17 Aug., 1968], No. 39459/68. Heading F2U. A shaft coupling consists of two similar half members, each of which comprises a sleeve and a flange secured together by electron beam welding, thereby eliminating the use of unitary forgings or castings. In the rigid coupling shown in Fig. 1, each coupling half consists of a hub sleeve 10 splined on the end of its shaft 17 and machined from high carbon steel, welded at its end 11 to a flange 12 formed as a mild steel pressing. The flanges are secured together by axial bolts and nuts 20, 21 to engage torque-transmitting projections 22 on one flange with corresponding holes or depressions 23 in the other flange. Rings 14 for oil seals 18 are welded to the outer ends of sleeves 10. In the flexible coupling shown in Fig. 2, the hubs 24 are secured on shafts 29 by tapered sleeves 28 and the flanges 26 are connected by interengaging axial pins 31 and resilient washers or unitary bushes 34 carried by the respective members.
